dont even touch them Posted by vvack0matic [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Any ways to protect rubber boots from deteriorating?, Jello4j, Fri, 4 May 2007 15:29:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
they tend to get brake dust from the pads on them the pads put out so much dust it cakes to the rim, or inside of the rim, and the boot, with just this buildup of brake pad dust on them is enough to crack and tear the weak rubber boot when a cleaner is applied then whipped, i found when redoing the brake pads if the tec. is not to concerned when loosing the caliper the wrench will slip and then it will rip into the rubber boot, destroying it. this would be the prime cause of a boot thats tore,
after many miles the boot can form holes with in the rubber much like the c.v. boots but on a much smaller scale.
if the little rubber boot was already past the point of no return there is nothing that can be done, however if i was to make up something to repair the boot with small dry rot holes, i might go the rout of using rubber cement, but this was only until i found one
to replace them.
but know if the boot gets tore and the caliper starts to make the hideous noise it is fine to drive with the tore boot. heck i did it for 3 yrs.
and after i replaced boots and used c.v. joint grease the rattle is gone and caliper works just fine.
on a scale from 1 to 10 (10 being fix now)of how important it is to fix
i`d say its a 2, the only reason i was obsessed with finding the rattle is at every stop light, stop sing, heck any time the car came to a stop the rattle was insane. passengers i had didnt know what i was talking about when i asked them (do you hear that)... if and when it gets destroyed it will let you know.
its just a drivers preference to fix it, the tore boots will not harm anything and the operation of the car is not affected.
just a note. any product that would be sprayed onto the rubber boots while they were installed on the car would land on the rotor and brake pad, and it would leave the car without brakes.
using water would not clean or preserve it boot in anyway,
its best to just leave alone until a tec. hits them with a wrench, or the car climes into the gram-pa years where everything drys out. (no offence gram pa)
but if you find you have this rattle and looked everywhere, look at the brake pin guide boots, if their tore you found your rattle.
