Currently, Premium is at $3.40 and regular is at $3.24 in southeastern WI. We forever hear that except for the big oil companies, no one is making any money in this market. I feel like the PR folks think we are just a complete bunch of dolts that nod and believe whatever they say! It drives me crazy!
RBOB NY gasoline futures closed today at $2.20/gal. It peaked at about $2.35 last week. In WI, we can add $.80 - $.85 /gal for distribution, profit and taxes. So for the forseable future, we are above $3/gal. Oil also closed, and has been hovering around $62/barrel. This is a lot less than the cost per barrel when Isreal went after Hesbolah last year. It shot to $78/barrel. Yet gas is just as high as it was. And last May, RBOB Nymex gasoline went all the way up to $2.40+. None of the fundamentals are in place for gas here to be $3.29/gal, but that's where it is.
Bottom line is - nothing has gotten the U.S. to drive less and consume less fuel. So the price is going to keep going up. We are now used to $3+ gas, so $3+ gas is what we've got.
Oh well.
When someone figures out what will get hundreds of thousands of U.S. drivers to use less gasoline...that will be the answer. If every family used 3gal less gasoline each week for a month, the retirement and hedge funds would run for the hills out of the oil and gasoline futures markets. Collectively, we just won't do it.
