I've had problems before getting the 134a out of the can too. Typically i know things aren't working if the can stays warm. On at least one occasion there ended up being a problem with the hose (cheap thing with a built-in trigger that i got at walmart). Switched to a more robust (simple)hose and it worked fine. On another occasion the quick connect appeared to be fully seated but wasn't. At least on my car, the clearance around the suction-side port on the compressor are very close to the coolant lines which makes it difficult to make a solid connection. I think the last time i filled up I literally had to hold the quick connect in the correct position.
