As mentioned on other posts,
1. I always make sure I purge the intake line before hooking up to the system, this gets any air out. Also makes sure the can has been punctured.
2. Contrary to what one poster mentioned, I never ever invert the can. Doing so allows liquid refrigerant into the low pressure side. I think most cautions I've read state that damage to the compressor can result from placing a liquid into the compressor (should be a gas).
3. I know some are reasoning they invert the cans all the time, I'm just telling you my experiences.
4. I always connect the low pressure side why the compressor is engaged. The pressure is lowest during this cycle. I connect the high pressure side after the compressor has cycled off, pressure is lowest during this cycle. My reasoning is less refrigerant loss. I haven't seen this mentioned in any a/c books anywhere, it is just a practice I follow.
5. If the ambient temperature is low, placing the can on something warm causes the gas to expand making it easier to charge. I found it sometimes take 5-15 minutes to empty a can depending on the ambient temperature, the charge in the system, and overall condition of the a/c system.
You should buy a good set of gauges. Also, a/c is pretty general. The same principles apply to all cars. There are probably some peculiarities to SAABs (switch location, etc), but otherwise, the basics are the same.
good luck
