Rainwater leaked between gasket and body, sat, rusted BAD and has actually eaten thru into interior of car at window bottom, and, from inside, out thru hatch in a little place. Doesn't drip into interior yet tho. I'm keeping an eye out for a replacement hatch at j-yard, color "Citrin beige" formerly known to everyone as champagne. Or may try to pull window glass and do a repair, with welded-in metal, lots of PPG DP402 epoxy primer, filler, more primer, local paint patch.
Then when glass goes back in will use soft urethane sealer on outer lips of gasket, to seal to body. Gasket itself looks like new.
I think that is the real culprit, water seeping behind gasket - - rain shouldn't be getting in between that rubber and the paint and sitting inside there, but it is and no paint known can resist constant standing water.
Also car has parking stickers from Falmouth, ME town landing, and from Mount Desert Island, and ocean air can do a number on things. Rest of car near rust free.
I have read good things about that PPG epoxy primer, favored by body shops and restorers, "rust can't get through it" sort of things.
I note on the windshield, the rain gutters end and dump water down along the side of the windshield gasket, and it also looks to need some soft sealant there, after a good cleanout of rain-deposited muddy crud.
