I guess it depends on how quickly the r134a leaks out. I would say that if it takes a month to leak to the point that its not blowing cold i would just keep filling it up. If you decide to go this route definitely learn to refill it yourself- its not hard at all. A can of r134a is about 5 bucks and a (reusable) hose is another $10. You can get both from walmart/ target/ etc. A can of r134a and approx. ten minutes of time every month would do it.
As for the $750 new compressor . . . the price (if it includes installation) is actually not too bad considering that a new one from a site sponsor is ~$600. That said, I've had good luck with used compressors which can be had for a few dollars at the junkyard. I bet you could get one for less than $50 used. Should take about 1-3 hours to install depending on how handy you are but certainly within the capabilities of almost any home mechanic.
