Some weeks ago I posted on shifting gate problems (going into fifth only) with my high-mileage '86 non-turbo 900. I got several very helpful suggestions (for which I thank you all out there), most of them quite certain that the problem was engine-mount-related.

When the engine's cold and/or the outside temp is cool, everything's smooth and quiet and fine, no hard shifting or grinding, no popping out of gear, no nothing.

But once the temp is high, the gate for fifth just seems to disappear. I had earlier replaced a completely failed front engine mount, then tried Redline MTL in the gearbox, and yesterday replaced the passenger side engine mount --which was probably quite mushy as the rubber was delaminated top and bottom from the steel body of the mount-- with a nice new one from Eeuroparts (The drivers side mount is probably still original, and I gather it's less likely to fail, as it's not near the hot exhaust manifold and that it's also a bitch to replace.)

Sad to say, I just tried it out this morning and after 40 miles in 75 degree weather, it would stay in fifth OK, but once I downshifted and tried upshifting again to fifth the gate disappeared like before. Yikes!

Earlier, in back-channel emails with Erikson, they thought it probably wasn't the detents in the shifter linkage, but a failing pinion bearing. Maybe so.

I don't have the Bentley manual (I do have the Haynes manual which has nothing on that), so I haven't actually seen that little section in there on adjusting those detents. Maybe somebody is willing to email me a scan of those pages in Bentley?

The engine is strong, uses no oil, gets good mileage and the car is otherwise quite presentable and fun to drive...except for the disappearing fifth shift gate, once I get onto the interstate, since at 70 mph, having to stay in fourth is really too noisy, too high-rev, too stressful, and probably uneconomic in terms of fuel milage. But the underbody rust is so extensive that investing in a new/rebuilt tranny would be nuts. I really do hate to give up on my beloved Blood Red Slob.

Any further suggestions??? Maybe somebody has a good car with a bad engine, suitable for a swap? I'm near Chicago.
