Well, you're doing all the right stuff.
As far as pinion failing: I really doubt its this.... I've had 3 fail. Generally when I'd buy a high mileage 80's 900T, drive the snot out of it, then 6 months into it, pinion fail. None of them did this intermittent 5th loss -- it does eventually cause 5th problems when it gets bad; however leading up to that I always had the dreaded pinion whining noise in 4th and 5th at highway speeds. It was obvious and I knew what was eventually coming. I'm guessing you don't have the whine noise right? (if you did, you'd hear it, it's not too subtle)
I think it is a combo of linkage, slightly tweaked shifter rod (from replacing front mounts and jacking engine/tranny unit up) -- on mine, fluid change and shifter adjustment fixed it. Engine mount is right on. Maybe replace forward shifter bushing and reclamp shift rod connection point to itself w/ a new clamp/taper pin/nut?
