might want to suggest to him to drive only in the night,
going through Arizona desert will be harsh.
days will be in the 100s and nights will be round 75-79
reason being (driving nights) is the car may have over heated unknowingly to the driver and now the thermostat is fried (frozen)
driving the car in night temps would be no harm to the motor.
7-8 pm to 8-9 am
if the stat is fried and the car was driven through the desert with temps in the 105 the head gasket would deffentaly get blown leaving the driver and passenger stranded in the 100 degree heat.
i drove that trip and after new Mexico there is noting for miles upon miles, to make it worse the hwy is brand new black tar road.
(nice and hot)
make sure you tel them to be careful
the car acting up may be from the extended use (wires)
on the amm, get some carb or contact leaner and spray the inside harnesses, then take the distributor cap off and look at the edge of the rotor (scraping all the charred black substance off it, use a pocket knife or a screw driver, do not touch the rotor edge with the fingers,
look in the distributor cap and clean the chard substance off the four points and reconnect the unit.
