Vack's post got me thinking a bit. I had similar symptoms in the Rockies many years ago driving a carbuerated Fiat Spider. Turned out I had carbon fouled plugs (due to my low land carb not being jetted properly for the high altitude - I was running excessively rich. While I would suspect that the modern fule injection system would prevent that from happening, its worth having your son pull the plugs and see if they are fouled. If so clean 'em up and use regular (not high test while he's driving at altitude). It's a long shot, but hell, its easy and its free. I figured it out on my Fiat, because, I thought the engine might have seized and was expecting to see oil on the plugs or something fatal.
Checking the plugs always provides valuable info on the overall running condition of the plugs - oil - bad, carbon-way too rich, white - way too lean, chestnut brown - perfect). If the plugs look good, it'll help him figure out if he's got a fueling problem, or an electrical problem.
On another note, his symptoms also seem reminiscent of a coal failure (in what else, my old Fiat). As the coal gets hot, it does not provide a reliable spark to the distributor and can cause all of these symptoms. Most Advance Autos, or AutoZone stores will check your coal for free. Also it is another easily removed part (all you need is the screwdriver that he should have in his Saab toolkit in the trunk.
I tell you, owning and driving a Fiat for 15 years is like taking a correspondence course in becoming a shade-tree mechanic - i"ve seen just about every wierd breakdown you can imagine.
