I removed the electronic EGR system from my 90 SPG over the weekend. I removed:

EGR valve under throttle body
EGR vacuum valve
EGR vacuum tank
All associated vac hoses
EGR metal pipe from exh to intake manifold

Then:

Plugged 2 nipples on the throttle body with rubber caps
Plugged 1 nipple on the turbo intake pipe by AMM (specific to EGR cars FYI)
Plugged exhaust manifold hole with plug bolt
Put blocking plate w/ gasket under intake manifold

Based on what I'd read here, I expected a slight net positive affect on boosting, engine smoothness, etc. I hardly expected the huge increase in smoothness I got by removing all this stuff. I must have had a vacuum leak under boost pressure somewhere in the EGR system, even though vac hoses were all 100% new and perfect.

Whereas car used to boost 1/3 into red and taper slightly, I now easily get 1/2 into the red with a bit of taper (with red box, 3.0 FPR, that's the only mods). But even when not boosting at full power, its just, "smoother" when boosting. More linear, less peaky.

Yeah, I have a check engine light now but I'm waiting on a new -948 ECU to come in.

Also car idles perfectly now. No lumps or slight misses at idle. Never idled steady as a rock before. I chalked it up to an old engine.

Anyway I REALLY recommend this to you guys with these cars affected by electronic EGR. After all Saab recalled it in 1994 for California cars. I always thought "don't fix what ain't broke" since my EGR was operating perfectly -- but the car's much smoother now.
