A long time ago someone told me that these cars had the EGR because it was something to do with the fact that the hp was bumped up to 175 or so in 1990 for the SPG cars... they got the mitsubishi turbo (regular 1990 900Ts have the same water cooled garretts as the 89 SPGs and 89 900Ts). And something about this albeit very slight HP increase meant it had to have the electronic EGR system to pass emissions.
The problem I think is in this specific implementation of the EGR system, not in EGR systems or theory as a whole. This particular saab system plain sucks and is unreliable under turbo boost conditions. PO on my car spent a ton of bucks chasing problems with check engine lights that all related back to EGR from about 1995 to 2002 (i have all the receipts). From what I can tell the car's on its 2nd ECU, had resistors put in the wiring harness twice, and has had 2 new EGR modulating valves (at 400 a pop) through the years.
