My friend has a convertible with 23K miles on it. That is the only way I know what they are supposed to look like. Indeed, originally they were smooth, not porous at all. Over time the surface breaks down. I have never tried dying or repainting one. That may not be a bad idea.

I've had very good success with a certain technique. First, you have to use multiple solvents to clean it really good. I use diluted swimming pool algecide to clean off the stuff nature put on there; dirt, pollen, bird droppings, etc. Then I clean it with PrepSol or GoofOff to get the man-made stuff off; waxes, tars, detergents, oils etc. Finally I finish up with a foaming product like Tough Stuff carpet cleaner to really clean the pores. Let it dry thoroughly, then give it a couple coats of Thompson's Water Seal. It will soak it righ up. You can use other things recommended in the detail BB like peanut oil or PoorBoys Trim Restorer but they tend to run down the side of the car when it rains.

It's best to remove the spoiler if you can. Although this requires a LOT more work to remount it properly. If not, make sure you mask the car really well. Also clean out the drain holes atop the spoiler by putting the hose nozzle right on them and giving them a good pressure blast.
