It sounds like you've been running the engine with the oil light on. If the oil pressure is really low, you don't get much more than a few seconds of this before really bad things happen. So you might be looking at a bad sensor.
The first thing I'd do is get a simple mechanical oil pressure gauge. Pull out the oil pressure sender and plumb in the gauge. See what you get for oil pressure at cold idle. If it's the 4-7 psi that the light should come on at, then yes, it doesn't look good. But if you see the 25-40 psi of a cold engine, then you've lucked out with a bad sender.
The relief valve is a bolt head down by the main pulley and oil pump. It's easy to remove, and oil won't come pouring out if you remove it (unless the engine is running, which would be pretty dumb). But it's a touch reach in a 900, but the oil pressure switch is easy to get to. Start there, as knowing the actual true oil pressure will go a long way towards understanding how deep the is water you're standing in. Let's hope for a minor puddle.
