As a followup to:

I yanked the valve cover and the distributor cap today, and spun the engine through its available 180 degrees. Rotor turns, cams turn. Cams line up properly with the cam tower, timing chain appears taut. I stuck a screwdriver in each of the cylinders (through the spark plug hole) and it appears all the pistons are moving properly with crank rotation.

I decided I was done troubleshooting and pulled the motor out. It's still attached to the transmission, but this weekend I'll pull the two apart and see what's going on.

Anyone have any bets on what went wrong and where? I'm personally baffled, although I will say it looks like this drivetrain has been apart before - there was a "spare" oil filter housing gasket on the skidplate (glued with gunk to it) and the transmission case is very clean. There are a couple things not put back together exactly right which normally would have no reason to be taken apart short of pulling the engine. Maybe it's a rebuild gone awry?
