Well, per my original post, the clutch is physically removed from the car, so there is nothing connecting the engine to the transmission. The transmission spins freely (in neutral) via the clutch input shaft. At this point, I can tell for certain it is something internal to the engine, since there are no accessories and no transmission in the picture...
