Long ago I had an 83 8 valve turbo I converted to 16 valve engine. I then right before the car was scrapped put in the famous EMS manual rack because I'd gotten a bad / rebuilt leaky p/s rack, and I scored one from a local saab indy for free.
Here's what I'll say, and I don't know if anyone really ever says this. I liked it better with a working power steering rack. The EMS rack was a pain in parking lots and try as I might, it felt worse driving around than the power rack. Also it didn't feel "quick" ratio to me, no more so than the regular racks. Nil to no improvement at high speeds.. for a while I had an 85 SPG w/ stock steering and this car, I'd drive them back to back, and the power steering was better.
I think growing up on not having to manhandle the power steering made me dislike the whole manual steering thing.
Anyway, just thought I'd throw out the unpopular (but my real world) experience...
ps - that 83 16v turbo car was sitting in a junkyard in bham alabama called matthews. I believe they parted it out long ago (like 1998) since they don't keep whole cars, but they might still have the ems rack. they're in birmingham, alabama.
