180 degree Engine Update + Machine Shop? Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] ![]() ![]() |
With the red car running, I took apart the 180 degree engine. The head bolts came out super-easy, and the head gasket looked new. I'm really quite certain somebody rebuilt this engine (or at least parts of it) and put it back together not quite right...
All I found in the cylinder bores was a mess of carbon dust, a small weed, and one of those little white dandelion seed thingies. WTF? Without the head on it, it spins just fine. There is a creaking noise coming from the crankshaft when you rock it back and forth, but other than that it spins around just fine. There are hand-written markings in orange on the crank that I've never noticed on a factory installed engine - furthering my opinion someone rebuilt this engine. There is also a clearly marked link on the timing chain - I don't think that's factory either.
Unfortunately I can't test the head's ability to spin since I pirated its cams and lifters, but perhaps it warped and the cams couldn't spin? I dunno.
On rotary engines, too much carbon buildup can effectively seize the engine - I've never heard of that on a reciprocating engine, but....?
Anyway, so I'm left with an engine I think is okay. I want to take it to a local machine shop and have them inspect the crank, bottom end, and bores... Anyone ever done that? Rough price or any idea on the time involved? If I can rebuild it, I'd like to keep it around for whatever shows up in the driveway next... :)
