I guess the question is, *when* did it break? was the engine running? as another noted the 16valve is an interference engine, the valves can contact the pistons if they are "out of position". This would mean a head job minimum and possible valve replacement. again this is an it depends. if you were screaming down the highway when it let loose it could be worse than if you were in the parking lot at idle and it just stopped. Have to take the head off to checkout any impact between valves and pistons. If the valves are really bad and the pistons aren't too bad it *may* be more cost effective to go to the junk yard to rob another head. still have it checked out (pressure tested) at the machine shop (and decked if it needs it) and the valve stem seals replaced. SB about $50-$75 for this if the head doesn't need major surgery.
As to the chain, you can get the link type where you roll it in and do the link, much like a bicycle chain.
BUT BEFORE YOU GO THERE... Tell us more about the engine (8v, 16v, 16v turbo, stock or breathed upon) and the exact circumstances under which your car decided to play bad.
over.
