I had a pronounced ticking noise on my 200,000 mile 92 900 S non turbo after it saw little use for a while when it stopped being my daily driver. When cold, it had a loud slap/tick that went away when warm, ran well otherwise. I am the second owner off lease, QS 10-40 oil had always been changed every 3-4,000 miles. I changed the chain guide pad in the valve cover, view of the valve train showed little varnish, assumed lifters were shot or at worse, a cracked piston skirt was to blame.
I put about a pint of Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase and ran it for a hundred miles, changed out the oil with more marvel for another 100 miles. Changed the oil again and the motor is much quieter. This engine has never been opened for repairs and while it still has some valve clatter, it is now much better after the Marvel treatment. I always viewed the stuff as snake oil, but I guess it is heavy in detergents and it resolves any varnish/carbon buildups, it worked here.
Yur injectors could also be making noises, also the fuel pressure regulator makes ticking noises as they age that could be mistaken for valve noise. Techron may help the injectors, FPR would have to be replaced.
Now if Marvel only made something for droopin headliners................
