I make sure the channels are all clear of old gasket, old sealer, and old crud. I clean with a wooden dowel or an old chopstick from take-out Chinese food (wood doesn't score the valve cover).

I just wipe afterwards with a towel. Maybe I have been lucky. I don't even use liquid gasket. I just use the raw naked new valve cover gaskets alone and with nothing. I hold the gaskets temporarily in place with tiny zip ties (which I then remove), or with string I weave through.

Then I apply my brand new Eeuroparts new distributer 'O' ring gasket and I am done. The new distributer 'O' ring is always a b!4ch, but with patience and the distributer hold-down being tightenned after the ring is greased, the distributer usually slides in well.

Arfarfl may have a different problem. It may be that the plugs are not sealing well to the surface of the head, so oil is blowing up and onto the head. Buy new plugs, make sure the head is not scored where the plugs meet it, use high temp anti-seize on the plugs, and tighten to factory spec (mildly hand tight).
