Did you use a torque wrench when installing it? The specification for these bolts is 15 Nm/11 ft-lbs. Over-torquing, under-torquing, and not having the bolts all at the same torque are all likely reasons for a valve cover leak. Uneven torquing or over-torquing effectively warps your valve cover. Generally this isn't permanent as long as you haven't totally gone primitive pete on the thing. Try re-torquing it.
Oil on the gasket is not a huge concern...you're SUPPOSED to put oil on your oil filter gasket! Cleaning the grooves on the cover and on the head is important, though.
