I don't know but I seriously doubt that removing that bracket could affect anything. Bell housing and front bolts are massive, and that's where the work of the starter is happening, and about all the strain, which is twisting force right at that nose drive end. If they can't support the hanging ass end of it by themselves, no matter how heavy, then something is seriously out of whack with the world.
Hundreds of other models of cars, the vast majority of all makes, have done fine for around three-quarters of a century without support of the rear of their starters.
That bracket seems like needless clutter and a pain to deal with on r and r of starter, so I'd be with you, d.c, on removing it. And if your rebuilt starter is true to type, it probably won't last near as long as the Saab OEM one and you'll have to take it out again, so you are making something easier.
Your post isn't clear - - you removed the bracket AT TIME OF replacing the starter, so besides no bracket, the difference also is, it's a different starter? The different starter could be the reason for any perceived difference in sound I'd say.
