Turbo squeling resolved Posted by Notnoel [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Ok, for Nashvegas and those who were kind enough to answer my earlier post
http://saabnet.com/tsn/bb/900/index.html?bID=351967 , or just enjoy a good mystery, The problem is now resolved, and boy it was a strange one.
First, I went ahead and swapped out my Garret for the Mitsubishi. Even though I didn't think that was the problem, I had been wanting to do the swap and it seemed like a good excuse. 5-6 hours later, you guessed it, the noise was exactly the same.
A day or so later, as I was checking that I'd gotten the bolts between the turbo and the exhaust manifold tight, I noticed that the exhaust manifold was leaking and that the top front stud (nearest the turbo) was broken.
The noise I was getting on spool-up was the exhaust manifold gasket vibrating (like the reed on a saxophone, when the engine warmed up the metal expanded and the vibration ceased. I tightened up the other bolts and the noise disappeared, and last weekend I used an extractor to remove the broken stud and replace it (that was no picnic either - god bless the reverse drill bit!.
BTW the Mitsy turbo rocks!
