CLUTCH SHAFT Posted by GUSSAAB [Email] (#984) [Profile/Gallery] (more from GUSSAAB) on Sat, 18 Aug 2007 19:39:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
We got a good deal (free!) on an 89' 900 from a guy who was tired of messing with the car. I'm working on it as a project with my 15 year old son so that he can have some understanding of auto repair and it will be his car when he turns 16. The car needs a lot of expected things (ball joints, tires etc.) but the main problem is one that I find perplexing. After about a half hour of operation the input shaft slides forward, strikes the input shaft cover, makes noise and leaks trany fluid. We have removed the primary drive cover and all of the clutch components.
Since the shaft can be fairly easily pried forward by design it's not clear to me what prevents that from happening under normal usage. The splines on the front end of the shaft look worn but not terribly. Of course I don't mind replacing the clutch , PP, flywheel, slave etc. but they look OK so I don't want to do that unless its neccesary. I feel that I should replace the input shaft but when searching for parts I'm not finding that as a replacement part.
Has anyone had this problem and does anyone have any recomendations?
Thanks!
