Head gasket replaced, preferred flush? Posted by Arabiflora [Email] ![]() ![]() |
It is with no small amount of pride that I can proclaim my head gasket repair job a success. It took forever (at least a 30 beer job over the course of a week of evenings) but I finally cinched everything down, traced the source of a coolant leak (insufficiently tight lower hose clamp at water pump) and even fixed the hard-start/rough idle/CEL problem: I had inadvertantly attached a fuel injector connection (cylinder 2, I think) from the wiring harness with the NTC and visa versa. They're actually readily interchangable, but it runs a hellofa lot better now (!).
I made liberal use of my digital camera in the course of the repair and hope to write up a guide/description of my experience sometime soon (once I stop patting myself on the back). The more immediate need is to ask if anyone has a preferred means of flushing the coolant system of engine oil sludge that accumulated in the course of the HG's demise. I've run it up to operating temp a couple of times using just tap water in the system then drained at radiator petcock and it still looks pretty slimy.
I'm thinking of doing a couple more cycles of same to get rid of the big globs, then Prestone flush to scour, followed by "permanent" replacement with MB coolant. I expect that few here will have problems with steps one and three; however, if there is a flush product that is preferred over Prestone, or is specifically designed for the task at hand (degreasing coolant system) I'd appreciate the info.
[Holy crap, I DID IT!! Huzzah!!]
