bdorgle,
The Borg Warner T37 was really a pretty decent 3 speed. It had been around a long time (as the T35) when Saab decided that a FWD version was just the thing for the 99. It was improved and renamed the T37 and carried on for the 900 line. The lubricants in the T37 transaxle are type F automatic transmission fluid (for the tranny part) and 10w30 motor oil or 80/90w gear oil (your choice, I always used the gear oil) in the differential part at the back. You have to check and fill the differential through a plug hole on the right (passenger) side of the unit just in front of the drive axle.
That plug has a 3/8" square socket so you can remove it with just a ratchet. There will be a big plug on the bottom at the rear to drain the differential oil (you can remove the rear cover otherwise, but get a new gasket first). You drain the automatic trans. fluid by removing the big slotted screw in the front-most pan, or just lower the pan if you're gonna change the filter too. The bolt on the bottom, left side, with the 13 mm head (sometimes 15 mm) is the drain plug for the engine oil (the top of the transmission case acts as the engine sump). So there's 3 drain plugs on the bottom of the unit. These are actually marked on the case but they're hard to see if you are doing this on the ground. In my experience T37 trannys typically go about 150,000 miles before they start to have problems, a few go farther, some not as far. There's lots of posts pertaining to the T37 on this board which you can read. Hope it's a good car for you. Cheers
