For every good news story on the cheap car that just needed a fuel filter, there are at least two where the good deal turned into a nightmare.
Remember one big item here - Austin isn't the driver. He's handing the car off to someone else, someone else that is just trying to get to school. Is she willing to accept the risk?
If I pick up a cheap car to knock around in, I know I'm running the risk of a piston to come out of the block. Is the driver willing to live with that, or is she going to complain when the heater doesn't work, or the brakes get hard, or the lights suddenly go out?
Parting out is fine, if you have the space, time, and inclination. Otherwise it is junker in the yard. This BB is very helpful, but I don't think we're going to take up a fund to fix the car, or drive out to pick up the girlfriend if the car craps out in a snowstorm.
Not knowing a lot of the situation, I'd say this - buy the car, if (1) you're handy and familiar with fixing Saabs (2) you've got the means to drop at least another grand into it to get it going, (3) you can take the time to fix it, and then drive it for a month or two to make sure the bugs are worked out, and (4) you've got space to leave the car without the neighbors complaining.
