I am posting this in the hope that I may find some help as breathing gas fumes is not healthy and I want to be able to drive my SAAB for as long as I can.
I took in my '92 Saab (130K purrs like a kitten) to a local Saab mechanic as I was having gas fumes in the cab every time I filled the tank with gas. The gas smell persisted (though weaker) in the cab even after the gas gauge had gone down. They found that the plastic tank had a crack on the top above the retainer belt. They replaced it with a used 900S tank and this tank ended up having a crack as well. Finally a good tank was found and installed. When I drove off from the garage and I did not notice any gas smell.
The first time I filled the tank the smell came back (unfortunately I had to go on a business trip which prevented me from taking it back immediately). I went on a short Interstate trip, filling the tank completely at every fueling stop. The fumes where strong for about 10 min. after fueling (on the road), the smell then slowly dissipated and I would not notice it anymore until I re-filled. The mechanic thinks it is because I have a cheap Autozone gas cap; I am buying a new locking gas cap from a saab web site (my understanding is that it is suppossed to be non-vented). Today I put some gas in between 1/2 & 3/4 full and checked for smell in the spare tire compartment before driving off, it was strong. After driving a couple of blocks (windows down as I have the routine down) I started noticing the smell, though not as strongly as when I fill the tank.
I love my SAAB and work on it doing what I can. I believe in taking care of your car and it will take of you. Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jesús Ned
