Flaky running, fuel issue??? 88 T16 Conv

After a week of trouble free driving the 900 has thrown a tantrum twice in the past 3 days. Sunday after stopping at a friends house for a few minutes, it would run for a second after cranking then die. It would run a little longer with the gas pedal on the floor. Finally it stayed running, a little ragged at first then fine all the way home. The fuel gauge was near the red zone so I topped it up.
Today after about 100 miles of driving it started to run in spurts as if the fuel supply was coming & going. About 10 minutes before this happened, I heard what I think is the fuel pump sounding like it was cycling. I managed to get it home but not up the driveway and hopped into the Mini to get my son to an appt. When I got home tonight it strated right up and I drove up the drive without a problem.
Should the fuel pump sound like it is cycling on & off? Seems wrong to me. Can I get to the relay without pulling the lower dash panel & jumper it to see if that cures the problem? Or is what I'm experiencing a sign the pump is on the way out?
I've never had any fuel pickup problems in my earlier 99 & 900s, are there any issues with this vintage?
Any other likely culprits?
Thanks for helping.
Ken
