Might the noise be from a worn timing chain tensioner or perhaps a hardened upper timing chain guide? I was amazed at the difference in start-up noises after I replaced the rubbery chain guide in the valve cover. I have three OG Saabs, all with 200K to 300K miles on the engines and have never had a lifetr/valve problem. Not that it can't happen, but I would make sure it wasn't something else before spending that amount of cash! Just my $.02.
