I think there are several indentions for the pawl to engage, so you may have chipped one. But as CMyles says, if it's working - keep going.

No problem going from drive to reverse.

The whine is probably an argument between the chip and whatever it's rubbing against. Whether or not it'll die tomorrow, I can't say. Keep an eye out on the fluid because you're probably going to find some metal in it. You just need to get it out so it doesn't cause damage somewhere else.

We all do stupid things sometimes (like doing a head gasket and having the car 180 out of time and bending the valves in you 2.1 head), so remember it could be worse...

I have a rebuilt AT that never made it back into the car (land lord had a fit), but it was fun to take it apart anyway.
