I'm smack in the middle of a tranny conversion/swap on my 93 NA auto. This was my kids car so I never touched his car. When the slush box went, he parked it and went back to school. The advise above is very true. You can easily pull the power plant, easily do all the work on the motor while it's out - seals, clutch, gaskets, and other things like suspension, ball joints, shocks, etc. Nothing is too hard, but each easy thing bares some attention here. Read up on the posts about the clutch removal, sounds so easy, it is, but some have well documented their troubles here (not to mention clutch bleeding). read about the shift control pin, oil cooler lines, etc.
A month is a very good estimate for me, tranny swap and a lot of small maintenance while there. Ths afternoon was oil filter housing gasket and pressure switch, oil pump O-ring, main seal, rebuild the crank sensor, water pump. All these require cleanup, removal of bolts, hose clamps, hoses, wire brush the old, thread seal, and reinstall. Some things can be done better as documented here so re-assembly might not be just the same as before (heater bypass, or total AC removal for example) so you need to be able to take your time and enjoy the work and the beer.
