Bob,
You're describing a healthy transmission with a bad leak. Find and fix the leak and you may get more service from the unit. Unless it has a cracked case or something (and that's pretty unlikely unless the car was wrecked) the leak will be a gasket or seal or the ATF cooler circuit. Most of those can be pretty easily fixed without removing the unit. How many miles are on it? TYPICALLY somewhere around 150,000 these automatics are due for replacement. When units leak like that it's usually just a matter of time until they get driven dry and serious damage results so I'd recommend that you don't wait to fix the leak. Check and fill your final drive oil while you're under there. Dry final drives are about the #2 cause of T37 transaxle destruction. If it's low you may need a gasket or seal there too.
Cheers
