it's possible to replace the chain without removing the engine. First, you should pull the valve cover and have a look at the chain guides. The guides should have grooves in them only at the outer edges of the chain, and not where the rollers go. If the guides are bad, this is an engine-out job unless you pull the cylinder head. See here for a diagram of what grooves you need to look for in Saab's service bulletin located here:

Assuming that your guides are OK, you can roll in a new timing chain and peen the pins with a motorcycle chain tool. This is one that works:

There's no need for the tool kit specified in Saab's service bulletin.
