Doug,
Do you have a small puddle of brake fluid on the skidplate, or on the driveway under the back end of the skidplate?
If your clutch pedal (sic, unless you're trying to sell it) was that worn, you would feel a snapping sensation and it wouldn't work at all. I drove my '88 for two weeks with a leaking slave this summer without noticing the fluid leak, but it was there.
Your two options (both involve getting a spacer in the pressure plate return spring fingers, search on fat washer method) are to try the rebuild kit and replace the seals only on your existing slave, or just replace the slave.
Why did it leak in the first place? Is the fluid line leaking or have the seals let go? If the slave seals are gone, is it because your clutch disc is worn down very far and the slave piston overextended? If that is the case, you're looking at a clutch since you have to pull the whole clutch assembly out to replace the slave.
