If you are not seeing a leak, it's probably not the slave cylinder... when the slave cylinder seals let go, fluid will escape past them and leak every time you push the pedal in. If you're not seeing that, it's probably the master cylinder.
Have you flush the brake fluid from the clutch hydraulics ever? It should be done every couple of years. You may luck out and find that crappy brake fluid has caused this problem.
If you need to replace the master cylinder, I'd recommend replacing the slave and possibly the line at the same time. It's a big job, but if one component has let go chances are the others are old too. No point in dismantling that system more often that you have to...
