How much driving needed to keep battery charged

first I want to thank saabnet for the thousands of dollars I have saved fixing my $500 '90 900 turbo myself. Without this site I would not have working sunroof, power windows, heat, heated seats, power antenna, or interior lights. All fixed by me, for free thanks to saabnet.
Now the dilemma, as of recently this car drains it's battery every two days. Then we jump it, and it is good for another 2 or 3 days, and that is it. I have put two new batteries (not cheapies) in it, hooked it up to a 3amp trickle charger (via the known-good car lighter)when it starts sluggishly all to no avail.
I am not eager to chase electrical demons and would rather put in a battery kill switch to eliminate a parasitic draw but then it occured to me that maybe this car is not even getting it's battery charged at all due to my driving habits. It is being driven 25mph stop and go 1 mile to the train and one mile home a day, 5 days a week. And sometimes I walk instead. Is this enough for the alternator to even kick in and charge the battery? I would be willing to try to diagnose/rule out alternator grounding issues once I know that I am even driving it enough.
thanks in advance for your help.
