Overheating in a '88 16V 900T (again)

I've read some historical posts on overheating. I have a specific question.
If the car was sitting unused for over a year, with a water/coolant mix in the radiator - and then re-batteried and started - ran fine for about 2000 miles - then suddenly overheated, cracking the coolant bottle and fritzing the fan switch.
What does this sound like? Thermostat? Clogged system? Timing?
