Thank you CM,
"Timing doesn't change just because the car sits for a while." Was good to hear and makes sense.
The car was running perfectly well when it was left sitting due to avoidance of driving a long and harrowing commute (boats and carpooling at no cost are much less painful.)
Overheating shouldn't wreck the fan switch. More likely the fan switch was bad and that's why it overheated. Even more likely that a wiring connection corroded while in storage and that effected fan operation.
This seems likely and was supposedly checked, after failure, by a local mechanic...though they seem less than scrupulous.
Coolant system clogging is sometimes a problem for cars in storage especially if this car is still running with it's original radiator.
Pretty sure it is the original and it may have had water mixed with the coolant when stopped. Not sure, just as I recall... three or so years hence.
Thermostats are sort of a weak link in general but these tend to fail so as to allow full flow. You'll just have to pop off the thermostat housing and see.
Great advice; will do.
Flush and replace the coolant and make sure that the fan system is fully functional.
Again, will do.
Best to do a pressure test to be sure that the cooling system has no leaks too. Once you've done those things you should have a winner. Then you have to cross your fingers and hope that it didn't warp or crack the head when it overheated.
This and a "Chemical test" was undertaken with negative (no APPARENT coolant to oil head leaks.)
Thanks again.
