Mainly because the brushes are probably worn to the 5mm limit around 140K miles. Alternatively, you can replace the brushes..you can get the brush kit from a BMW dealer, get the alternator number if you're squeamish.
Takes about a half hour the first time you do it (replacing the brushes...getting out the regulator can be tricky if the screws are bunged or really in there corroded), you'll need a soldering gun, (iron is too wimpy) and a dremel tool works good to slice the wire/bushing, then you desolder the brush and they drop out.
I don't even bother to disconnect the battery anymore, but I recommend you do the first time you remove/replace the regulator.
