Reverse is not synchro-mesh on these units so it's necessary for the cluster and reverse idler gears to not be rolling (or just barely) when you go to engage reverse. (If you are sitting still, like you should be when engaging reverse, then the reverse mainshaft gear will not be rolling either). Normally shifting into a low gear and then into reverse while continuously keeping the clutch pedal floored will achieve the goal. There is a spring on the shift mechanism that's supposed to assist shifting into reverse by lightly pressing 1st synchro sleeve but it's pretty ineffective.
If you can shift the car into reverse with the engine off, so that it will then start with the clutch disengaged (pedal on floor) and then drive in reverse as you enagage the clutch, then the problem you are having may be that your clutch is not fully disengaging (a hydraulic problem). When in neutral (like you are just before you hit reverse) it's still transmitting torque to the cluster shaft even when the clutch pedal is on the floor. A second possibility is that the teeth of the reverse idler are worn off at the back end. Does it pop out of reverse? If that's the case you could try the deeper engagement fix that's described in several posts on this board. Beyond that you could replace the reverse idler. It can be done without pulling the unit but it's a bit of a chore, especially without a lift. So check you clutch hydraulics first. Good luck.
