Boost/APC level Automatic vs. Manual trans Posted by DietrichOS [Email] ![]() ![]() |
My dad has a 1989 Turbo Convertible with a five-speed manual and a red box APC. Floor the throttle in that car, and the APC needle goes right to the border of the red and yellow zones.
Another friend who had a C900 turbo with a stick, but no red box, said his did the same thing.
My 1990 turbo convertible, black box and automatic, only pushes the needle into the middle of the yellow zone, even at full throttle and high RPMs. Is this normal? It makes sense that Saab would dial the boost back for the weaker automatic trans, but I am unaware of any difference in horsepower rating for the automatic vs. the manual.
I don't really feel the need for more performance out of my car, it runs great as it is, of course it is not as fast or fuel efficient as a five speed, but I feel the automatic suits the convertible personality well. It's a cruiser. Just wondering if this is normal.
