That's why they crank so long at startup when fuel pressure check valve fails.
Saab's approach is to use that check valve to hold the fuel pressure in the fuel system from the last time it ran. And to not let fuel pump run unless cranking or engine running.
When check valve goes bad there's no residual pressure in the fuel system so injectors don't spray any fuel and since starter is drawing almost all the current when cranking, very little gets to the fuel pump for it to prime the system, even tho it's technically working. So 900s tend to need a long crank time at startup.
Many people report "hearing" fuel pump at ignition turn-on but I believe they're hearing something else: a buzzing relay or some other component. They only believe they're hearing fuel pump because they're SURE it is supposed to be on.
