I would remove the brush/regulator and replace with a new one. It can be done in the parking lot of the autoparts store in about 15 minutes. Takes a long phillips head screw driver or a small pair of vise grips. If you are familiar with the removal of this part and don't have a new one, you can gently tug the brushes outward to allow the braided copper wire to allow the brushes to extend a little bit more. If that doesn't help, then the alternator is probably going to need replacement. You could drive home using the battery, but keep the lights and other battery draining items off. When the motor starts to stutter, find a good place to get someone to give you a recharge and a jump start, then go a little further. If you had a spare battery (like the original one which was good), then you could have a little more distance between recharges.
