HEP is head-end power, which your car does not have.
As for the "chaging" light, it's definitely worn out brushes on the voltage regulator. A bad diode would put the charging light on very dimly all the time. The rectifier is the same thing as multiple diodes wired in a certain combination. It's not those unless the light was on dim all the time. When the light goes away above a certain engine speed, it's the brushes. As the alternator spins faster and approaches its peak output (usually around 1900 RPM but more when the brushes are losing contact) the alternator will generate enough current to extinguish the warning light, for now. I always used a short, stubby phillips-head screwdriver, but use what you've got. And definitely disconnect the battery first.
