My 86 went over 200k before needing one and would have lasted longer.
But some road debris split a hose and I overheated just a bit.
I drove with the pin hole leak for 6 months.
If you do it, pick up one of those ratchet tie down straps. Then you take the intake manifold bolts out, you can use one hook to attach the the fender and wrap the other around the intake (behind the throttle body somewhere in the middle). then use the ratchet to pull it out of th way a bit. That'll save you from removing it completely and will also keep it out of the way.
Other maintenance items to consider at the same time:
every seal on the back of the engine
inspect oil and water pumps
PS motor mount - it's 2 bolts from being out anyway
don't forget turbo gaskets: oil (in/out), to manifold and return line o-ring into block (clean that line out really good too).
coolant flush, t-stat and fan switch. Clean temp sender in manifold.
Check all the wiring that runs along the fuel rail for rubbing through.
