MattB,
Two things typically make the final drives in these units lock up and break; 1)bearings worn so badly that the gears fail to mesh correctly and 2)lack of lubricant. Both situations have the potential to damage all the parts in the unit, it's just that the final drive is usually the part that fails and puts the car on the side of the road. (People just turn up the stereo until that happens.) What I'm saying is that if this gearbox was driven without lubricant until it blew it's final drive then it's very likely that all of the other gears were badly hurt too even though they may seem to turn OK. In a unit where the pinion bearings have failed catastrophically the likelihood that other gears were badly damaged is very high and only close inspection of each little piece will tell the tale. Now you can't replace the pinion shaft without complete disassembly of the unit so you'll get the opportunity to inspect all the parts if you proceed with this unit but it sounds like what you've got is what transmission guys refer to as an organ donor. It's sort of not cost effective to stuff a good salvaged final drive into a unit like the one you have. Part of that logic is based upon the fact that the final drive (the ring and pinion gear assembly) is set up and shimmed within the main case hence swapping final drives around necessitates that you go through the whole set up process. As was mentioned previously, the ring and pinion in your automatic are of no use for a 5 speed. Also you don't really want to mix and match ring and pinion gears, they are mated once they are set up and run for a while so you get a lot of noise and undesirable wear when you do that. I don't like giving guys bad news but it sounds like you should be looking for a better 5 speed to work with. Maybe if was looking right at that transmission I'd see it differently but I'm goin on what you wrote and it sounds bad. If this is a special car make the effort to find a better gearbox or buy a fresh rebuilt unit and you'll be glad you did. Good luck.
