Cold Start Problems --'88 SAAB CVT

As the weather gets colder here, I am noticing a problem starting my
'88 SAAB CVT. It only happens when the car has been sitting -- overnight or while I am at work. I am in Atlanta, so the weather is getting colder
for the first time this fall.
Here is how the start problem occurs. The first time I try to start the car (with all acessories and lights turned off) nothing happens. Nothing.
I turn the ignition off and immediately switch it back on. With a bit of hesitation, the car starts. By hesitation, I mean nothing happens and then the starter kicks in and the car starts. I don't mean the starter
kicks in and turns for a period or time before the car starts.
I don't want to confuse you.
The battery is just a year old. I was concerned new belts had stretched,
so I tightened them, but it didn't solve the problem. The alternator did get "wet" several weeks ago when the seal on the water pump began to leak.
Coolant got onto the belts and probably onto the alternator as well.
I plan to check and clean the battery connectors today in case this is the culprit.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Frank
