Owsley9,
If the transmission has 170,000 miles on it I'll bet it's got problems other than just needing deeper reverse idler engagement. You can (usually) fix the reverse gear problem by just modifying the idler actuating arm, a simple and quick procedure. The tiny bits that have worn/broken from the tips of the gear teeth pose no threat at all and are probably all securely stuck to the magnet. The real problem is that these transmissions are typically due for pinion (and other) bearing replacement at or around 150,000 miles. So unless it's already been rebuilt it's running on borrowed time. Other aspects of the car may make it well worth paying $1500 and then getting the transmission rebuilt. I don't think that you are likely to find a good one for $1500 so you should price a rebuilt transmission (installed), do the math, and make your decision. Good luck.
